Created in 2022 after his death, the Barry Bauman Art Institute honors the generosity of the Chicago-based art conservator, who donated over a million dollars in free restoration services to Hoyt Sherman Place over 10 years. His work includes The Repentant Magdalene and Apollo and Venus, two of the showpieces in the Hoyt Sherman Place Art Gallery. Implementing programming for students and adults to foster and grow their interests in the arts will ensure Bauman’s legacy continues.

What is a memoir? It’s an intimate look at a special moment or event in your life, and your thoughts on the experience. Is there a holiday or family trip you want to remember? Or perhaps a first encounter with a friend, or saying goodbye to a loved one? Maybe you want to write down your memories to preserve them for the next generation.
In “Writing Your Memoir,” you will learn how to bring to life those moments that are unique only to you, the moments that make you, you. If you have memories, you can write a memoir.
We will begin each class with a discussion about memoirs and how to write them, focusing on description and action to create story, how to convey characters and use dialogue. How to create place and atmosphere, and how to build to the moment of reflection.
We’ll then focus on the specific memory each student wants to write about, and they’ll write half a draft in class, the draft I call, “The Messy Imperfect Getting It All Out” draft. The assignment will be to finish the draft, bring it back the next week, and read it to the class. The ears always pick up things the eyes sometimes do not.
In the second week, there will be an assignment to write a second draft and share it the following week.
The final assignment will be to write the last draft paying attention to everything we’ve discussed in class and any questions the students might have.
