Private Tours Available, with Donation, to See the Completed Second Floor Mansion Restoration

Hoyt Sherman Place may have been shuttered since March 2020, but the staff took advantage of the forced closure and pivoted to a very exciting project. After a successful capital campaign to add the new 3-story Center for Artists and Education adjacent to the existing theater, Hoyt Sherman Place jumped to restoring the second floor of the historic mansion, once home to one of Des Moines’ Founding Fathers, Hoyt Sherman.

Help Hoyt Sherman Place complete this restoration project with a $500 donation to reserve a private tour for your group (up to 8 people). Led by very knowledgeable staff members, tour attendees will hear a rich history about the Sherman family and their residence, and what restoring historical significance to the mansion means to preserving the continued legacy of Hoyt Sherman, not only as the namesake of this museum, art gallery, and performance theater, but also as a prominent name in the community.

From rebuilding walls from original blueprints and re-creating ornate corbels in the bedroom vestibule, to salvaging a marble fireplace façade from Cincinnati, OH to complement existing fireplaces and reproducing intricate woodworking for the doorframes and transom windows, visitors will be transported back to the Victorian era. Room décor features gas/electric chandeliers recovered from Hyde Park, NY, plus period appropriate bedroom furniture.

Be the first to see these magnificent spaces! Your generous donation will help Hoyt Sherman Place complete this thrilling project – restoring historical significance to spaces on the second floor of this notable mansion and landmark.
