Hoyt Sherman Place Foundation Receives Iowa Arts & Culture Emergency Relief Grant

Hoyt Sherman Place is pleased to announce that it has received a $14,000 Iowa Arts & Culture Emergency Relief Grant from the Iowa Arts Council, a division of the Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs. Grant funds will provide ongoing operational support while coronavirus concerns and restrictions continue to pause events in the gallery and theater.

Research shows that investments in arts and culture -- in museums, performances and historic buildings, for example -- help communities boost tourism, attract businesses, retain workers and improve the overall quality of life for residents. Accordingly, the Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs helps Iowans invest in the people, places and points of pride that define our state, Hoyt Sherman Place being one of them.

“We are so appreciative of our partnership with the staff at the Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs and accept with great gratitude the lifeline received today with this Emergency Relief Grant,” says Executive Director, Robert Warren.  “Hoyt Sherman was an anchor for the Des Moines Community and our staff looks forward to the day we can welcome everyone back into his home.”

Hoyt Sherman Place is the premier historic cultural center in Iowa and works to present outstanding performances, to celebrate Iowa’s history, and to grow arts and culture in the region. While its galleries and 1,252-seat theater have hosted some of the best singer-songwriters, recording artists, comedians, and entertainment personalities, the use of its space for local dance recitals, graduations, swearing-in ceremonies, and weddings are what have solidified Hoyt Sherman Place in the community’s heart.

The Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs and its three divisions – the Iowa Arts Council, Produce Iowa-State Office of Media Production and the State Historical Society of Iowa – empower Iowa to build and sustain culturally vibrant communities by connecting Iowans to the people, places and points of pride that define our state. The department’s work enables Iowa to be recognized as a state that fosters creativity and serves as a catalyst for innovation where the stories of Iowa are preserved and communicated to connect past, present and future generations.
