Hoyt Sherman Place’s mission is to create outstanding experiences for the cultural, historic and educational benefit of Central Iowa and its residents and its communities. Now, as a recipient of a $100,000 Community Foundation Leadership Grant recipient, the Hoyt Sherman Place Foundation will be able to do just that.
Hoyt Sherman Place is the premier historic cultural center in Iowa and works to present outstanding performances, to celebrate Iowa’s history, and to grow arts and culture in the region. While its galleries and 1,252-seat theater have hosted some of the best singer-songwriters, recording artists, comedians, and entertainment personalities, the use of its space for local dance recitals, graduations, swearing-in ceremonies, and weddings are what have solidified Hoyt Sherman Place in the community’s heart.
The funds provided will support the initial phase of fundraising for the Hoyt Sherman Place Foundation expansion project capital campaign. The expansion will improve the backstage area of the theater and patron areas to make them more convenient and ADA compliant. These additions will provide an opportunity for Hoyt Sherman Place to attract additional talent, to enhance programming in the art gallery space, to make the facility more accessible to community groups for a variety of functions and to open up the residence of the original mansion for guests to experience.
“The Hoyt Sherman Place Foundation sincerely appreciates the support and endorsement of the Community Foundation of Greater Des Moines through the Leadership Grant. This funding propels the expansion project forward and provides a wonderful boost during the silent phase of our fundraising efforts,” Executive Director, Robert Warren says. “Upon completion of all expansion phases, patron services will be enhanced by the addition of new restrooms and lobby features, new spaces will be made available for community use, and improvements made to the backstage will offer a more refined artist experience. All of these changes will allow Hoyt Sherman Place to continue to provide great cultural experiences and entertainment to central Iowa.”
